JUNIOR GOLFERS MAKING A PUSH TO BE NOTICED BY COLLEGE COACHES

The months of June and July are big months for junior golfers who are pursuing their goal of playing college golf. June 15 following a student-athlete’s junior year in high school is the 1st time that a Division II college coach can have in person, off-campus contact with a prospective golfer. July 1 following a student-athlete’s junior year in high school is the 1st time that a Division I college coach can have in person, off-campus contact with a prospective golfer. Junior golfers and their parents can have written correspondence with college coaches the summer following their sophomore year in high school. Junior golfers can talk personally with coaches at any time during their career as long as they are on the school’s campus.

Players in the St. Louis area have been playing numerous tournaments on the local, regional and national level in order to catch the attention of college coaches. Scott Langley of Ballwin, MO has started his summer well. Scott qualified for the Junior World Tournament in California earlier this month. Scott shot 67, 77, 74 to place in the top 10 of the AJGA event in Wichita and shot 71,79,75 to place 13th in the AJGA event in Long Grove, IL last week. Scott is really playing well on the national level. He also shot 69, 69 to place 3rd at Little Peoples this week. On the local level, Tim Cochran of Des Peres, MO had a great week at the St. Louis Boys District Championship. Tim shot 77 on day 1 at the Legends and then came back with a 67 on day 2 to win the tournament by 8 shots. Kelsey Meyer of Chesterfield, MO has also started the summer well. Kelsey qualified for the U.S. Junior Girls Amateur this week. Kelsey had to win in a playoff to secure a spot in the Championship. Kelsey also shot 74, 76 to finish 3rd at Little Peoples.

Monday, June 26, players from throughout the United States will come to Glen Echo Country Club in St. Louis for the U.S. Junior Boys Amateur Qualifier. The U.S. Junior Amateur is one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the United States, and players will have to go low to qualify for the event. Scott and Tim are definitely 2 of the favorites going into this qualifier next week.
