Practice Makes Perfect...Or Does it?

Heather Gilchrist, MPT/ATC/MGS
Spinecare Incorporated

We have all heard that “practice makes perfect”, but a better way to put it is that only perfect practice makes perfect. It is absolutely critical to the betterment of your golf game that every aspect of your training and conditioning be technically correct. If you go to the range and hit a bucket of balls using inefficient movement patterns and mechanical compensations, you only become more proficient at a poor swing.

Muscles “remember” repetitive movementsso your brain doesn’t have to work as hard to coordinate them each time. Ideally, the golf swing becomes a more of a reflex than a consciously organized effort. Depending on the practice, one can have a beautifully consistent and safe swing, or become trapped and fight habits that are hard to overcome.

With that in mind, it is easy to understand the importance of seeking technical instruction from a PGA pro on the range, as well as engaging in strength and conditioning under the direct supervision of a health professional certified in golf-specific training. At SpineCare, Inc., we use a wide variety of resistance and cardiovascular training machines as well as the latest golf-specific equipment, training techniques and drills to ensure the perfect practice that results in a stronger body and better game. Safe and Happy Golfing!
