Erik Kuselias welcomed Dustin Ashby on NBC Sports Radio for a little U.S. Open discussion on Friday morning as players were preparing to resume their first round at Merion Golf Club.
Kuselias asked Dustin Ashby which player would benefit most by winning this 2013 U.S. Open. Ashby answered the question with Phil Mickelson, while Kuselias countered with Steve Stricker. Sure, a win at Merion for Steve Stricker would solidify his position among the games greatest players and undoubtedly be the icing on the cake guaranteeing entry into the World Golf Hall of Fame. But a win for Mickelson would cement his legacy among the games all time greats. Mickelson has won 4 major championships, three of them being Green Jackets. He’s proven he knows how to play Augusta National and capture the Masters, but Mickelson has yet to prove he can close the deal in the British Open or U.S. Open.
