Trevor Dodds sat on the sideline earlier this year as the top Senior Professionals made their way to Bellerive Country Club for the 2013 Senior PGA Championship. While his peers including Jay Delsing and several members of the Gateway Section teed it up in front of their home fans, Dodds was left in the gallery to only watch the festivities.
On Monday at Quincy CC, Dodds and Jeff Whitfield earned co-medalist honors at the US Senior Open Qualifying. Ironically enough, Whitfield was also on the outside looking in this May at Bellerive CC as the last alternate waiting for a spot in the field. Whitfield spent much of Thursday on the practice range and putting green just hoping to get a chance to tee it up for real.
Unfortunately for Doods or Whitfield, only one spot was available at Quincy CC so the two players who shot Even par, 70 would have to decide which player earned the ticket to Omaha Country Club via a playoff. Dodds made birdie on the first extra hole relegating Whitfield back to alternate status once again.
The 2nd alternate spot would come out of another tie at 1-over, 71. Jay Delsing and Steve Lotz headed for extra holes where Lotz knocked his tee shot on the green on the short 300 yard, par 4. Lotz two putted for birdie to earn the 2nd alternate position.
