Skip Berkmeyer has enjoyed a remarkable amateur record competing in Missouri Golf Association championships but one title was lacking. After 72 holes at Meadowbrook Country Club this week, Berkmeyer has now completed the MGA Slam by capturing the 2013 Missouri Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
Berkmeyer has won 3 Missouri Amateur titles, 3 Missouri Mid-Amateur’s and 2 Missouri Four-Ball Championships but never a Missouri Stroke Play title until this week. His best finish in this championship was at his former home club, Norwood Hills CC, when he finished 2nd to Ryan Marks in 2010 by a shot.
Meadowbrook Country Club hosted the Missouri Stroke Play Championship in 2006 when John Kelly captured the title with a four day total of 282. Berkmeyer bettered that by 2 shots posting rounds of 68-71-70-71, 8-under for the championship finishing 5 shots clear of Steven Soucheck.
A total of 51 players made the cut in the 2013 Missouri Amateur Stroke Play Championship with the cut falling at 155 (+11). University of Missouri-St. Louis Senior, Joe Atkisson made the biggest move on Wednesday firing 70-69 to finish T4. Teddy Jones waited until the final round to make his move posting 67 to go with his earlier 73 resulting in a T7 finish. Defending champion, Brad Nurski finished with 72-71 to also finish T7.
