It’s a long week for the players advancing in the 2013 Missouri Amateur Championship. For the fortunate two left standing on Sunday morning it means they have played 7 competitive rounds of golf over a five day span with a 36 hole match remaining to decide the title.
Joey Johnson, a sophomore to be at Missouri State University, faced Ryan Zech, a junior at the University of Missouri. Johnson won the 2012 Missouri Golf Association Junior Amateur and found himself in unfamiliar territory against the more experienced Zech. Zech lost to Skip Berkmeyer in the semifinals last year at Dalhousie Golf Club.
Johnson would make 4 birdies over 30 holes in the championship match to defeat Ryan Zech, 7&6. Pars were definitely good scores this week at Blue Hills Country Club as the players battled gusty wind, tight fairways, thick roughs and big undulating greens.
“I didn’t always hit it how I wanted throughout the whole tournament, but grinding it out was key,” Johnson said.
